Special Student Event
No. No. Day at the legislature, date not yet set; most likely in February.

Grade Level:
9-12

Description:
In an effort to assist students in civic education, members of leadership in the Colorado General Assembly are sponsoring a Student Legislative Education Day (SLED], which will occur in February 2006. Students from high schools across the state will be at the Capitol interacting with their legislators, participating in mock committee hearings, and watching floor action. We are arranging to put bills on the Senate and House calendar that will be of interest to young people.

Goals of the program are: (1) to educate students about how Colorado state government works, (2) to develop relationships between state legislators and youth, and (3) to create partnerships between the Colorado Legislature, students, teachers, and existing high school classroom-based civic education programs. Each program would provide an option within its programming for teachers and students who want to analyze state issues.
