VOICE and Primary VOICE incorporate conflict resolution, law-related education, and service learning to introduce students to important civic knowledge and give them skills to prevent violence. Primary VOICE is a literature-based curriculum that focuses on four major concepts—governance, responsibility, conflict resolution, and participation. The curriculum builds thinking, problem-solving, reading, reflection, and communication skills. VOICE is a seven-unit curriculum that features a range of interactive strategies, including a simulated legislative hearing and mock trial. Units cover governance, conflict mediation, the conflicts between rights and security, the legislative branch, the executive branch, the judicial branch, and service. Both units culminate with a service learning project that is selected by students. VOICE and Primary VOICE were developed by the Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago.
